Working on a plantation was very difficult. Unlike the mill there was no heavy machinery to get hurt, there was long hours and hard days. On a plantation they would work long periods of time and work on the farm. Slaves were fead and given houses and clothes unlike the mill workers. Plantations are watched over by the manager who would make sure that all the slaves were doing they were supposed to do and make sure that no one was out of line. Slaves were often abused. They were beaten and wiped and they could not do anything about it because they belonged to the owner and were not free. Most of the plantations in the south were cotton picking farms and the slaves would have to pick the cotton and also shirt through the cotton and get all the twigs and leaves out of it. This was the souths way of making money. Slaves were sometimes required to pick a certain amount of cotton and of they did not make they amount they would get wiped. If they stayed at a constant pace and make the dead line slaves were on the right track. Unlike at the mill where death was most of the time an accident at plantations some slaves were beaten to death for various reasons such as running away, stealing these actions has consequences. Plantations were very physically demanding and slaves worked very long hours in the day. Most plantations started to work at sun rise and were in bed at 9:00. Sometimes these hours were stretched out and slaves would work into the night with very short breaks for food. Slaves were all ages and once someone was a slave they stayed a slave until they died.
