In the lewiston mills children and adults particularly woman worked to make textile products. the children were often mistreated and manipulated. the children would do most of the same work as adults and on top of this they got paid significantly less. These types of conditions were very dangerous for children and adults the same. Some reports that were published said that children would have troubles with breathing in the dust and every thing in the air. Lose of hearing was also common from the loud machinery. From lack of sleep some children would accidentally fall into the machinery. Fingers, toes, hair would sometimes get pulled of from the heavy machinery, other times children would even die from getting caught in the machinery. The lack of sleep was from the long hours people would work in the factory. Most woman/children would work up to 11 hours a day. These long hours were even sometimes stretched out and went longer into the night. The overseers from the mill controlled most everything in their lives. They controlled when they went home to when they ate and woke up in the morning. The poor working condition in the mills killed many children and woman. Mills not only worked people to death they also paid them poorly resulting in kids to work in the factories and families starving to death.
